Senior Mechanical Engineer - Thermal Systems & Hardware Development
Location: Cincinnati OHÂ OR Austin TX (Relocation assistance may be considered for senior-level candidates. If based in Central Texas, willingness to travel to the Midwest location during the initial year is required.) Engagement Type: Permanent Role Target Compensation: Highly competitive salary + performance-based incentives.
Here’s what you’ll be doing:
- Driving Core Product Development: Supporting the creation, integration, and validation of advanced power generation systems. This pivotal position involves executing the design of assigned products using robust engineering principles and adhering to organizational standards, practices, procedures, and program requirements. This work may encompass mechanical and/or electrical engineering aspects for all relevant products.
- Component Ownership: Taking full responsibility for hardware components and/or sub-systems, covering aspects such as functionality, durability, manufacturability, serviceability, cost efficiency, mass optimization, and validation.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partnering with design, electrical, software, and performance analysis teams to develop resilient designs.
- Technical Problem Solving: Conducting technical reviews to present findings and propose solutions for identified conflicts. Managing trade-off discussions and critical engineering decisions.
- Prototyping & Validation: Building, testing, and validating prototypes frequently and early in the development cycle to uncover design flaws.
- Design Quality Assurance: Supporting the design checking process by reviewing technical drawings and ensuring tolerances, processes, and material specifications align with internal product design guidelines.
- Supplier Engagement: Supporting the identification and selection of external partners for both prototype and production needs. Assisting in the procurement of hardware from key partners as necessary.
Here’s what our ideal candidate has:
- Deep Thermal Expertise: Strong foundational and practical knowledge of heat transfer principles, particularly as applied in demanding engine systems (e.g., automotive, turbine, or aerospace applications).
- Hands-On Hardware Proficiency: Demonstrated ability to work directly with physical hardware, design components, and conduct practical experiments.
- Design Passion: A genuine enthusiasm for engineering design and a strong desire to create innovative solutions. Candidates with personal projects involving mechanical design (e.g., car modifications, robotics, competitive engineering challenges) are highly valued.
- Self-Driven Initiative: The capability to work autonomously, proactively take charge, and propel projects forward without constant oversight.
- Advanced CAD & Simulation Skills: Proficiency in leading 3D CAD software (e.g., NX) and experience with structural and thermal finite element analysis (FEA) tools (e.g., ANSYS).
- Direct Product Development Experience: Experience working directly on product development and design, rather than solely managing projects where design work was outsourced to other companies.
- Collaborative Mindset: A highly collaborative personality with a willingness to learn and adapt, involving interaction with adjacent functions to resolve complex issues. The team values a highly hands-on approach and a willingness to commit to project demands.
- Lab Testing Experience: Experience in laboratory testing environments, including setting up, calibrating, and interpreting data from various forms of instrumentation for parameters such like pressure, temperature, flow, strain, and acceleration.
- Problem-Solving Acumen: Ability to design and troubleshoot complex mechanical and thermal systems.
- Effective Communication: Ability to communicate clearly and positively, both verbally and in writing, with internal and external stakeholders to address their needs promptly and follow through on commitments.
- Microsoft Office Suite Competency.
Academic Background:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field with a strong focus on thermal sciences and heat transfer.
- Master’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline preferred.
- 10 to 15 years of engineering experience, with a proven history of successfully designing and troubleshooting complex systems.
- 3 years of experience in the automotive, aerospace, or medical device sectors is a plus.
